Sydney Szmuc

Paul Quinn College Freshman Accepted to The League of Young Voters Education Fund’s Signature Leadership Program

DALLAS, TX – March 6, 2014 – Paul Quinn College freshman and Arlington native, Sydney Szmuc, recently accepted a spot in the spring 2014 Texas League Fellows (TLF) Program, a six month leadership program specifically tailored to empower civic-minded young people to become community advocates and activists. Szmuc will start the program in April, along with other young Texans across the state.

“TFL aligns with my studies and passions. I am deeply honored they selected me to participate with this elite group of college students,” said Szmuc. “The goal of The League of Young Voters is to help engaged people build their community, while encouraging young people to research, address and develop solutions to community problems. I’m learning about this now in one of my classes and from one of my mentors, President Sorrell and I can’t wait to start implementing what I have learned.”

Szmuc enjoys getting to know the diverse student body at Paul Quinn College and spends time with her peers discussing communities, backgrounds and dreams. She envisions that this hobby will come in useful as she contributes to the Texas League Fellows Program.

“At Paul Quinn College we encourage all our students to seek opportunities to serve,” said Michael J. Sorrell, president of Paul Quinn College. “Sydney may only be a freshman, but she is one of our most talented and promising students. We have enormous expectations of her.  She is going to be special.”

Currently, an Education major with a minor in Business, Szmuc wants to get her masters in non-profit after graduating from Paul Quinn College. Szmuc’s ultimate goal is to run a non-profit that empowers low-income families to break their cycle of poverty.

About The League of Young Voters Education Fund

The League of Young Voters Education Fund educates and trains young people to participate in the democratic process. The League of Young Voters Education Fund’s signature leadership development program, The Texas League Fellows (TLF) Program, is a five‐month leadership tract specifically tailored to empower civic‐minded young people to become community advocates and activists. Over the course of the program, TLF engages in a series of sessions focused on self‐development, leadership training, strategy, online organizing, data management, and running successful campaigns. TLF uses an adapted curriculum developed by Harvard Professor Marshall Ganz and the New Organizing Institute. TLF program graduates serve as our main pool to fill leadership roles on staff and within field teams.
