Paul Quinn College announced the launch of its intercollegiate soccer program for men and women with the introduction of Stephan Rodriguez as head coach at a press conference on April 2. Rodriguez comes to PQC from Mountain View College, where he led the women’s team to the NJCAA Division III national championship tournament in 2011.
“It’s been over a year of hard work,” said Giovanni Macias, a sophomore Business Administration major who introduced the idea of forming a soccer team to President Michael J. Sorrell in Fall 2011. “We have a long way to go but meeting our new coach is very exciting.”
“This is yet another sign of our growth as an institution,” said President Sorrell. “We are so excited to launch this program. We have a community of students and families who love soccer, and to be able to bring this team to fruition is incredibly gratifying."
Rodriguez told the audience that he is ready to get to work immediately. "I am very confident that we'll get this thing going in the right direction very soon," said Rodriguez. Referring to the NAIA's Champions of Character program, Rodriguez declared that his teams would be "true champions of character on and off the field." Paul Quinn was named a Champions of Character Five Star Institution for 2011-2012.
