President's Weekly Report
February 28, 2008

Greetings Quinnites-

It’s been a wonderful few weeks here at Paul Quinn College.  We have been visited by a Fire Chief and an R&B diva; our students have won awards; and one of the Kings of Comedy delivered on a promise. I hope you enjoy this week’s overview of campus life.

Life on the Yard

* UNCF NAC/NPAC Annual National Conference: Quinnites Kendall Beck, Al Middleton, Patricia Johnson, Pre-Alumni Council Business Manager Erica Doyle, and Shanequa Days joined me at the conference.  Quinnite Days, in addition to her duties as a member of the women’s basketball team, currently serves as our Ms. UNCF.  Quinnite Middleton has been elected the 2008-2010 Vice President of Membership for UNCF NAC/NPAC.

* Future Quinnite Cotton Commits: Little Rock, Arkansas native Ebony Cotton has become the first Presidential scholar in this fall’s incoming class.  Quinnite Cotton comes to us ranked 2nd in her class of 224 students and with a 3.8 gpa.  Please join me in welcoming her to the family.  Presidential scholars receive a full scholarship to PQC as long as they keep a 3.5 or better gpa, remain on course to graduate in four years or less and participate in at least one extra-curricular activity.

* Flake to Speak: Reverend Dr. Floyd Flake, Pastor of the Greater Allen A.M.E. Cathedral of New York and the President of Wilberforce University in Ohio will be our final “Tuesdays in February” speaker.  Due to a scheduling conflict this past Tuesday, Rev. * The Fire Chief and a Diva:  Dallas Fire Chief Eddie Burns and R&B star Angie Stone served as the guest speakers for our “Tuesdays in February” program, February 12th   Chief Burns inspired the 200 + students with his call for raising the bar of leadership in their ranks.  Ms. Stone wowed the crowd with her life-story and by performing several selections with our Quinnite Jazz Band.  The next morning Ms. Stone shared her experiences at Paul Quinn with a national audience on the Tom Joyner Show.

* Broussard and Miles Speak: ESPN the Magazine writer Chris Broussard and WFAA star reporter Darla Miles thrilled our students with a discussion about their careers as journalists during their “Tuesdays in February” visit on February 19th.  Both Broussard and Miles stressed the importance of preparation and seizing opportunities.  I doubt our students will forget the “Miles Test” anytime soon.

Always remember. . . .

I AM A QUINNITE

When someone says to you “I am a Quinnite”, that person is doing more than informing you that they attend, work for or graduated from Paul Quinn College.  They are telling you that they are the personification of W. E. B. DuBois’ “Talented Tenth”.  They are expressing to you that as a Quinnite they wear the mantle of “race men and women” proudly.  Such men and women embrace the legacies of Malcolm, Martin, Mandela, Che, and Sun Tzu; knowing that the only constant in life is change, but it is the change agents who write history.  Quinnites will be the change agents whose voices tell the stories of their eras.

Quinnites accept that in their lifetime, others will disappoint them and fail to live up to the standards that they, as members of this special clan, have set.  These men and women know that many who are their color will not be their kind and that many of their kind, will not be their color.  It is for this very reason that in the world of purple and gold, production triumphs over protocol.  These dreamers understand that the journey to greatness will be filled with difficult decisions, painful choices, and moments of self-doubt - everyone will not make the trip.  However, they also know that this is the route they have selected.  They have chosen to be stronger.  They have decided to work harder.  They have answered the call of leadership.  Because at the end of the day, they are Quinnites and for them there was no other choice . . .  leading, is all they know how to do.

If you have an item that you would like to see included in my weekly reports, please don’t hesitate to forward it to me at msorrell@pqc.edu.  I’m always happy to share our great news.

Take care and I look forward to hearing from you,

President Michael Sorrell
