Texas Lyceum Scholarship

The Texas Lyceum Scholarship offers undergraduate Paul Quinn College students the opportunity to further their academic pursuits in Public Policy, engage the broad range of leadership within The Texas Lyceum and attend our conference to be held on Paul Quinn’s campus April 26–28, 2018.  The Texas Lyceum is a historic, independent, non-partisan institution dedicated to cultivating young leaders by exploring policy issues in Texas with the objective of enhancing understanding of those concerns among the state’s current leaders. The Texas Lyceum Scholarship helps this esteemed organization promote the importance of education and leadership at higher education institutions across the state.

The undergraduate student selected for the Texas Lyceum Scholarship will represent exemplary academic accomplishment and leadership on the Paul Quinn College campus and/or within their community.  For the life of the scholarship term, all academic work and leadership activities shall be performed at a level in keeping with standards set forth in the scholarship application. Additionally, the student selected for the scholarship will be invited to attend the Lyceum’s Conference to be held at Paul Quinn College April 26-28, 2018, receive the award during the presentation ceremony, and network with Texas Lyceum Directors and guests.

The scholarship is contingent upon students fulfilling the obligations and expectations described by the Texas Lyceum. The selected student will be expected to plan and oversee the disbursement of their scholarship funds and maintain excellent academic standing and good community standing throughout the course of the award period.

The Texas Lyceum Scholarship winner will receive $2,500 to cover expenses associated with their undergraduate enrollment.

Qualifications of Applicants

Applicants to the program must be enrolled as a sophomore, junior or senior student at Paul Quinn College, be in good academic standing with a minimum GPA of 3.0 and no course grade lower than a B, and must have completed  Introduction to Quinnite Servant Leadership.

Application and Selection Procedure

Applications for the Texas Lyceum Scholarship are due to Paul Quinn College no later than March 2, 2018. Applications and ranks them based on the following criteria:

  • Applicant’s academic standing 20 points
  • Applicant’s essay response (3 pages) 30 points

After the Paul Quinn Scholarship Advisory Committee reviews the applications and makes the selection, the Committee will consult with The Texas Lyceum Scholarship Committee on the final selection.  The Paul Quinn College Advisory Committee will inform the successful awardee by the end of March 2018.

Guidelines for Applicants

Application Submission: Complete applications are comprised of 1) the applicant’s CV, 2) a signed consent form for Paul Quinn College to verify academic standing, 3) essay response, and 4) a letter of recommendation (to be submitted by the faculty member). Details of the components are provided below. Applications must be submitted via email or hard copy to the Office of Academic Affairs by 5:00 p.m. on the deadline specified.

  1. Applicant’s CV: Applicants should include their CV with their application; however, undergraduate transcripts should not be included.
  2. Academic Standing: Applicants must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.0 and have no final course grade lower than a B through the end of the spring 2018 semester in order to remain eligible for the Texas Lyceum Fellowship Program. Applicants must sign and submit a consent form provided by Paul Quinn College allowing the Scholarship Advisory Committee to view their final semester grades.
  3. Essay Response: Applicants should respond to the question posed by the Texas Lyceum. For the fall 2018 scholarship, the question is “Why is healthcare important to the state of Texas?” Statements should be three pages in length, single-spaced, and size 11 or 12 font.

Responsibilities of the Scholarship Winner

The recipient will work with the Office of Academic Affairs and their supervising professor to prepare a report on their experience with The Texas Lyceum and conference and how these experiences combined with the scholarship impacts their educational and professional lives. Additionally, upon completing the Scholarship, the recipient will fill out a brief Scholarship evaluation survey for Paul Quinn College.  Additionally, the Lyceum Scholar will be invited to the Texas Lyceum’s conference to be held April 26-28, 2018 at Paul Quinn College located in Dallas, Texas where they will be presented with the scholarship award and the opportunity to network with Texas Lyceum Directors and guests.


The successful applicant to the Lyceum Scholarship will be awarded a sum of $2,500 for their academic efforts.  The Scholar is responsible for wise and careful use of the award funds. The awarded sum is the total of the Scholar’s financial support; requests or claims in excess of this amount will not be honored.
